Term Limits:

Ted Kennedy served as a senator for 47 years, which represented 60% of his life.  He was a career politician.

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." - Lord Acton, 1887.

No politician should become so tenured that they can, as a result of their accumulated power, wield influence beyond that which was intended by our founding fathers.  We have for this very reason put term limits on our president and governors.

Term limits are supported by the majority of Americans as demonstrated by the fact that states are beginning to adopt term limits for their legislators.  The reason the state legislators have been leashed by its citizens and not our federal legislators, is because citizens at the state level, often through referendum, still have the power to influence their government.  Term limits on the federal level have not been successful because our lawmakers do not want to pass laws that will put them out of a job.

If we expect our elected officials to "do the right thing" then we must remove the temptation to do what will get them reelected.  Most career politicians have learned that what gets them reelected is taking care of special interest groups and their campaign donors.  It is time for term limits at every level of city, state and federal government.
